Daily Duties at U.S. Coast Guard:

My current responsibilities, include, but aren't limited to providing professional instruction for the U.S. Coast Guard's Advanced Electronics School in Yorktown, VA. As a functional curriculum manager, I create, update, adapt, and review curriculum to meet requirements of the service or the student body, as needed. As functional quality manager, I monitor the system failure reports from the field and provide input to headquarters engineering for lean solutions. For example, I recently saved the Coast Guard over $32 million dollars in cost avoidance by offering a lean solution for a poorly engineered dry air feed system to a weapons control system in the fleet. The solution (a screw-drive, oil-free compressor) was adopted as a prototype and is slated for installation fleet wide. As a functional personnel manager, I provide technical assistance to graduates in the field via e-mail and phone on how to troubleshoot difficult electronics problems. As functional quality auditor, I provide internal audits on our management controls, manage input to our budgets, and as Master Training Specialist, I assist our own and other schools here on the base with their academic issues.

What they like about U.S. Coast Guard:

Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
