Daily Duties at Department Of Materials Engineering, Auburn University:
Responsibilities: Handling 3 core research projects and be responsible for everything related to these projects starting from - (1) designing 3 separate experimental set-ups (with other complementary set-ups) for 3 projects and ensure their functionality and repeatability, getting familiar with the working principles and functionality of various electrical/electronic devices (sensors, power supply), mechanical instruments, modules, and synchronizing their computer assisted operation by writing codes, making arrangements for calibrating them. (2) Three separate experimental process design for 3 projects following and maintaining technical standards and specifications as needed by specific case, running routine tests to decide the experimental parameters, deciding about sample configuration and quantity required for performing the full-fledged statistical analysis (3) Designing metallurgical heat treatment process for achieving desired microstructures for the sample in term of various grain sizes and hardnesses. (4) Microstructural characterization by performing rigorous full-fledged metallographic examination and measuring the grain size by following ASTM standard and specifications, measuring hardness and to keep a meticulous track about the each individual sample in terms of their dimension, microstructure, deformation, exposure conditions etc. (5) Executing the experiments as desired by performing various mechanical testing and metallographic and fractographic characterizing and choosing appropriate time frame for using these machines to run the tests uninterrupted (6) Mechanistically and quantitatively monitoring and characterizing the mechanical responses and fracture properties, performing statistical analysis of the data and relating the fractographic and metallographic results to the root cause of failure specific to microstructures and other experimental parameters such as various exposure conditions and degrees of mechanical deformations, recommending desired microstructures for improving performance. (7) Summarizing the result and reporting the summarized data directly to the PI (supervisor), publishing paper and/or going to conferences and/or forums for presentation (8) Teaching metal laboratories and occasionally metals theory and led a team of 10-12 senior level undergraduate students (occasionally graduate students) to accomplish 6 different short metallurgy based projects on various metals and alloy systems, performing all sorts of metallurgical characterizations, introducing ideas to improve the ongoing process and methods if necessary.
What they like about Department Of Materials Engineering, Auburn University:
The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
