Daily Duties at Cbs News / Cbs This Morning:
Medical Unit Producer. May 1993 I was promoted to Associate Producer (from Researcher) and officially requested the open position in the medical unit, generally earmarked for a more seasoned producer. I sought out this opportunity as a means of progressing in the business. I broadened my story-telling skill-set by producing more health related taped features profiling real people and the medical situations impacting their lives. This included creating a 3-part smoking cessation series at the height of the national smoking cessation craze, profiles on people with cancer and back disorders. I also developed stories tackling ethical issues in medicine. In January 1994 - February, as an Associate Producer I snagged a plum assignment to produce feature stories on Olympic athletes and venues for CBS This Morning under the banner of CBS Sports for the 17th Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Working on foreign soil I pooled skills from various areas of expertise as a live demonstration producer, field producer working directly with correspondents for live-shots, script writer, music producer, post producer supervisor, to fill segments for two weeks of on-air morning news coverage. In 1998, I was again selected to produce for the broadcast under the sports umbrella for the 18th Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. October 1995 I was officially promoted to Producer and also continued covering high profile breaking news events: 1997 -- JFK Jr. Plane Crash, Oklahoma City Bombing Trial, OJ Simpson Trial. Los Angeles fires, earthquakes, various plane crashes and school shootings. Assigned to immerse summer interns creative development associated live television production. Since I had a large roster of live and demonstration segments that used various elements (props, taped interviews, graphics, research etc) I offered interns opportunities for hands-on practical experience in ideation and execution relating to segments needed or suggested for air. I taught skills in writing, videotape editing, story development and gave interns full credit for their work. Since I produced 4-6 medical segments weekly and produced other live/taped segments there was plenty of work to share. Collaborating with the interns resulted in more ideas to pitch to senior management, freed me to pick-up other assignments and contribute more to the broadcast. I was tapped to take over the bi-weekly craft and cooking demonstration segments for Martha Stewart.Medical Unit Producer.
