Daily Duties at Science Applications International Corporation (Saic):

I was hired to serve as the liaison between the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) and SAIC for the distribution of numerical weather prediction products from FNMOC to SAIC. I was a team member with 8-10 other meteorologists (2-4 PhD’s) as a separate division who worked together to develop OMEGA and provide operational support with the output from the model. These data files from FNMOC were then used as the initialization files for the Operational Mesoscale Environmental model with Grid Adaptivity (OMEGA) which is a mesosale model (developed by SAIC) that provides a detailed picture of the boundary layer (first 2 kilometers) of our atmosphere. I was directly responsible for ensuring that these data files were available to us for use in OMEGA. I also helped develop the graphical user interface in the computer language C that is used to view the outputted files. OMEGA also has an embedded atmospheric dispersion model (ADM) which runs at the same time the model is producing its output and uses those data files to calculate/generate the dispersive pattern of some chemical, biological or radiological hazard. These data files included global and regional coverage and were pushed to us daily at different time around the clock. This required monitoring at all times 24/7. It was my responsibility to make sure that these files were available and that these files were processed and in the proper format for generating an operational forecast. Additionally, I was hired to maintain and update the Meteorological Data System (MDS) which is a system of unix/linux scripts that process and output the numerical weather prediction model data in a format that could be used by other models to include dispersion models. This system requires 24/7 monitoring and I was solely responsible for its greater than 98% uptime and successful processing of all incoming data requests. The U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) received daily formatted data files that were the direct result of computer programs (scripts) that I wrote and maintained.
