Daily Duties at Bcpss:

I was hired to teach all elementary subjects with the exception of science, art and music in french at Baltimore international Academy. Baltimore International Academy is a language immersion school that translates the Maryland Department of Education curriculum into four modern languages, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. After I got hired I was asked to attend a forum to meet my fellow teachers on the school premises for us to get to know one another. At this meeting, i realized I was the youngest and only teacher with no background in teaching. I was also the non native speaker of the language in which I was to teach the children. This made my colleagues especially the one who was to teach the same grade as I wonder if I was truly competent for this role. I may not have a degree or certificate in education but growing up with two teachers has somewhat prepared me for this role be it consciously or unconsciously. As a teacher, I developed and taught second grade elementary education in French. This helps in good organisation and consistency. Thus I am always prepared and also helps in keeping the students focused. I taught, Math, Social Studies and French grammar and culture as well as assessed and evaluated students. As a teacher, I wore many hats including being a judge, mother , comforter and even a referee to twenty-four students between the ages of six and seven. It was not always easy handling such situations because I realized some of these children were only replicating what they see on a daily basis. This made me show them more affection as well as give them pep talks that eventually made them feel safe around me and one another. Additionally, I held parent teacher conferences to discuss my students with their parents or guardians. During such conferences, we talked about the students performances in general and collectively devise a way to further help them to become better. I love teaching because it gives me a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.
