Daily Duties at Build:
When I started at BUILD, I was employee number six. The program was housed in a business incubator with 20 students in the after school program and it served three schools. The company had a rough curriculum based on instructing students who were already in the program but there was no clear feeder system into the program nor was there curriculum to go along with it. I created the E1 (Entrepreneur’s One) course as an entry level entrepreneurship program for ninth grade students as well as the corresponding two semester curriculum. I tested the curriculum through direct instruction every year for four years and created assessment materials although not required to by an accreditation body. In addition, I wrote the strategic plan to expand this course across school districts but into new corresponding counties as well as states. I created corresponding financial models that created ratios to measure how many students we could expect to enter the tenth through twelve grade program at BUILD after E1 along with the administrative needs such as program offices. In order to facilitate this expansion over the next four years, I designed, tested and implemented trainings for new on-site teachers, program staff and mentors. To assist with fiduciary needs of this expansion I helped write grants, spoke with funders and planned business competition events in order to raise money.
What they like about Build:
Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
