Daily Duties at Martin Memorial Health System:
As a Senior Radiation Therapist I treated and was responsible for treating 30 to 70 cancer patients a day with Varian linear accelerators to cure or relive patients pain. One of the first things that are done in the morning is QA on each machine to ensure the machine is in range to use, this is done on a daily basis and can take up to an hour from start to finish. From morning to afternoon while the patints are being treated you have to watch several computers to make sure everything is working correctly. For each patient, verification images are taken before treamtent and reviewed by the doctor. As well as treating patients, being the senior therapist I had to train all new employees on the equipment and wokflow of the day. Another responsibility included making the pateints daily schedule and the staff schedule. This includes interaction between the doctors, nurses,reception, and other family members. Any questions that were asked, I had to take care of. I worked hand in hand with the chemotherapy clinic as well. During my time, the hospital decided to update one of the linear accelerators. Since I was the lead senior radiation therapist I was included in the sales team, where I was sent to different places in the United States to test several linear accelerators. I had to pick the best one that would be suited for all the therapist.
