Daily Duties at Mc Carter & English:

McCarter & English is a large law firm with offices in New York and New Jersey. It employs hundreds of attorneys, paralegals, secretaries, and office assistants. Initially, I reported to two partners. The department consisted of two partners, three paralegals, two secretaries, and a file clerk. I filed approximately 100 tax appeal petitions every year and prepared all matters for hearings in compliance with all applicable time constraints. I was often called upon to promote new business by meeting with town officials and prospective clients for lunch, etc.; I traveled to many Tax Assessors' offices to glean comparable sales for tax appeals. I was transferred after one year to a multi-state class action defense department since they required additional paralegals due to the size of the project. That department contained three partners, twenty associates, ten permanent paralegals, a case manager, ten secretaries and generally one hundred temporary workers. Our job was to obtain and disseminate large volumes of documents from the client, which was a well-established worldwide insurance company, in order to utilize same in document productions. We also partnered with a large New York firm in our defense efforts, and had an in-house imaging/coding department. We had meetings on a weekly basis with the managing partner of the department regarding current developments and requirements in the litigation. Since I was designated as "Gatekeeper" for the imaging/coding system, I met several times a week with the personnel of the company providing the imaging/coding services. Sometimes I was required to accompany attorneys to confer with the client and cull documents. We worked many weekends in order to supervise the temporary workers in their document reviews and to prepare documents for imaging/coding. Several hundred thousand documents were stored on our system, and we could redact them, Bates stamp them, and otherwise manipulate them online. When the litigation was settled, we participated in telephone conferences to assist policy holders in completing the stipulations of settlement and other documents.
