Daily Duties at Liberty Mutual Group:
Served as a paralegal to the then newly formed Regional Subrogation Staff Counsel Office. I reported to the Regional Subrogation Counsel, and also to National Subrogation/SIU Counsel. There were approximately 12 subrogation departments across the country, consisting of 2 to 6 attorneys, and 2 paralegals. As a direct result of the procedures I implemented with the department, the recoveries achieved by our office consistently far surpassed those of larger departments. The attorney instructed me in his unique recovery strategies, which were incredibly cost-effective, and I reviewed every single file (approximately 75) and took the steps necessary to ensure that they were on a fast track to successful resolution. I introduced myself to the adjusters by telephone, e-mail, and at presentations, and fostered their trust and confidence in me. I communicated with approximately thirty adjusters. As the department expanded from personal injury claims in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania to property damage claims (fires, explosions, water damage, automobile collisions, errors and omissions, faulty construction, theft, product liability), medical malpractice claims, bankruptcies, and document productions pursuant to subpoena, I re-examined all existing procedures in order to take on more attorney-level tasks, so that the attorney would be available to attend depositions and other calendar events. I trained several subrogation paralegals during my tenure at Liberty Mutual, and was promoted to Senior Paralegal. At the time of my separation from the Company, I was in charge of approximately 150 of our 200 files. The other 50 files were assigned to another subrogation paralegal in my department. I enjoyed initiating in-depth conversations with outside counsel working on our files, for the purpose of composing detailed notes regarding subjects such as the status of the litigation, any pertinent deposition testimony, and factors adversely affecting recovery prospects, (such as the incarceration of the plaintiff) in the database which we shared iwth the client. I conducted Initial Paralegal Review of all new matters, noting relevant timelines, such as the expiration date of the Statute of Limitations, obtaining necessary discovery such as police reports and fire reports, and making recommendations to the attorney for cost-effective recovery.
