Daily Duties at Andrews Space:
Engineering for many technically advanced aerospace and defense-related projects. Hired in to support Andrews' subcontract with Northrop Grumman Space Technologies (NGST) proposal to NASA's Orbital Spaceplane program (Predecessor to the Orion Capsule being built). Responsible for writing the launch facility emergency egress requirements document, design impacts, and concept of operations, and the launch abort system requirements document. Subsequent to the submission of the NGST Spaceplane proposal, I transferred to support an Andrews subcontract to Aliant Techsystems (ATK) proposal to NASA's Ares I launch system and Ares I-X flight demonstration vehicle. Responsible for writing the Thrust Vector Control System Requirements Document and the associated subsystem specifications. Became expert in the Ares I and I-X interfaces and assumed responsibility for the interface control architecture and diagrammed and distributed the results. Many smaller projects, some concurrent: - Requirements allocation and CONOPS development from fab. to flight for ATK’s Prompt Global Strike proposal. - Supported satellite hardware in the loop simulator system setting up a pneumatic tubing fabrication shop, purchasing tooling and training personnel in tube assembly fabrication techniques. - Traded CubeSat propulsion system concepts. - Performed thermal analysis on a proposed NASA Altair Lunar Lander concept using a buried RL-10 with a radiation cooled nozzle extension. Designed and optimized the propellant feed system, balancing line pressure loss with propellant tank weights and a novel boost pump system for several propellant combinations. - DOORS admin. coordinating multiple company user access supporting NASA Commercial Crew/Cargo subcontracted to Rocketplane Kistler. - Learned tools and generated orbital environmental assessments including solar radiation, atomic oxygen, thermal, particle and ionizing radiation, and micrometeoroid using the European Space Agency (ESA) SPace Environment Information System (SPENVIS) and orbital debris using NASA ORDEM Micrometeoroid and Orbital Debris prediction software. Documented design impacts and mitigation features and authored the Environmental Specification and Quality Management Plans for internal SmallTug electric orbital transportation system and a proprietary SpaceDev program (now Sierra Nevada). - Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) advanced concepts analysis think tank team member, performing concept evaluation, analysis and leading the Andrews subcontract to SPARTA Inc. Concepts evaluated ranged from spacecraft concepts for low drag for long term low altitude operation to advanced sensors, counting and time-tagging individual photons.
