Daily Duties at Black & Veatch Corporation:

To assist in a group of about seven engineers to provide retrofit re-powering assessment for studies on two different power plants. My assignment was to provide the control equipment assessment and cost estimates. On the first study I went on a two day trip to the owners plant site with a group of about five engineers to obtain sufficient data to derive a cost estimate for replacement equipment or refurbishment, and determine what equipment required replacement or refurbishment. We studied the plant layout and equipment, obtained drawings, took pictures, interviewed plant personnel and took notes on our observations. Most of the control equipment was old and would need to be replaced if refurbishment proved a viable option. We returned to the office and discussed our findings with each other and to document our findings. Plant equipment other than the control equipment was in bad shape and would prove too costly to repair. On the second study, I went on a two day trip to the owners plant site with a group of about five engineers including a supervisor to obtain sufficient data to derive a cost estimate for, and determine what equipment required replacement or refurbishment. We studied the plant layout and equipment, obtained drawings, took pictures, interviewed plant personnel and took notes on our observations. The plant in general was in fairly good condition. The control equipment was old and needed to be replaced but primary piping for the equipment was in good shape and could be reused. I provided a control equipment replacement estimate to our estimators who, along with the recommendations from civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, prepared an overall plant refurbishment cost estimate to the owner.
