Some methods of teaching may be more efficient than others. But, it is through this process of creative teaching that we, as educators, learn what is best for the student’s learning through our own trials. It is through this passion in finding what works best for the students in order for them to be able to speak the unspoken hearts, express the inexpressive minds and emotions, and continuously improve the learning progress for both the students and the educators. I find great value in this continuing growth process, and appreciate all that comes within it – in which, I believe, will help naturally to produce greater outcomes. A value that is priceless – as supposed to a result that we simply settle to and call it the “work of art” or the “masterpiece”. I believe teaching is ever-changing and continuously developing. It is an unending, continuous and evolving journey of learning how we as educators can share our great talents and experiences to bring out the best in the students and others; not just ourselves. This is where I find my true gratification through helping someone to learn and grow, and my pure gratefulness to have the privilege to do what I love: to teach. Expressions do not always come out the way as expected when executed in real life, especially for the students. Often times, the creative expressions by the students can be altered to a completely different outcome because of small influential change done not by their own free-will, but by the teacher’s preferred thought. This is why I like to help them to exercise their way of expressions without relying on me to give the answers, but guide them through my resources to help them to learn and find the answers through their own creativity. I like to view all processes through the eyes of the students in order to help them meet their own expectations. I want to become their resource, not their source. For example, in one of the studio foundation courses which I had taught, students were to create a self-portrait of themselves for one of their projects. To provide them with some resources, I showed various ways that some can view as their own “self-portrait”. I showed the Apple brand logo and the iPod, and students immediately responded “Steve Jobs”; the Microsoft logo - students responded “Bill Gates”; image of the Starry Night - students replied “Van Gough”; the Chanel brand logo - students replied “Coco Chanel”; then I played the Fur Elise in music and students replied “Beethoven”. I explained to them that these are some of the examples that one can express themselves as their own face and color. And that one can express themselves dynamically in variety of ways to represent their own identity. The results and the various elements presented by the students were astonishing. Moreover, an organic seed cannot bear a pure and healthy organic fruit if planted in bad or contaminated soil. Likewise, a chef cannot make his/her own creative dish if the ingredients have been tamed or adjusted to meet the standards of another chef’s preference. The same way, I, as an instructor, do not want to be the bad soil, nor do I want to give the students the ingredients that have been tamed. I want to provide the students a clean, untamed, and un-touched canvas where they can bring out, and express their own true colors with the guidance of me as simply being the resource. Hence, I believe teaching the students the ability to express their own true colors and creativity is one of the core fuels to any progressive development. The world of Fine Arts, to me, is more than the utilization of techniques, the collaboration of artworks, or the incorporation of creative colors. It is finding the significance of change, the progress, and what is greater than simply the “great” result, which we settle to appreciate and call it the “masterpiece” or the “work of art”. I believe being an educator is to continue to extend this very core understanding of Fine Arts to the next generation of artists – to learn beyond what is greater than the “masterpiece” or the “work of art”; and embrace the importance of the progress, the change, the development, and even the unexpected outcome in the process. My passion in teaching originates from this very idea, and is where I find my true joy and happiness.
