Daily Duties at Veterans Health Administration:

the second most senior level nurse leader, who has authority and responsibility for the leadership, management and direct oversight of the VA North Texas Patient Care Services, program initiatives and associated projects congruent with comprehensive strategic plans, implementation processes and outcome measures related to patient care. As a key member of the VA North Texas Senior Executive Leadership Team, the Deputy ensures that the Patient Care Services are managed effectively and efficiently, as well as appropriately supported with a broad range of clinical, administrative and supportive functions. Including direct patient care across the continuum in acute, ambulatory, long-term, home-based, community and Telehealth settings, staff education and research, outreach and the affiliated community based endeavors. The Deputy Director engages and works collaboratively with national and regional level leaders to incorporate strategic initiatives and new programs at the local VA Healthcare System, and provide direction to mid-management impacted by changes. Matrix lines of authority are established in a collaborative effort with various organizational leaders to ensure the goals and strategic directions are fully supported by Patient Care Services and other Services. The Deputy Director has direct input in the decision making process that affects both formal and informal structures and their implications on the operation, management, and productivity of all patient/clinical care programs throughout the healthcare system. The organizational complexity and the crossing of accepted organizational and supervisory lines of authority mandate the use of considerable tact, diplomacy, negotiating skills, and decision-making capability. In addition, the Deputy Director is a key leader in the development of organizational goals, missions and priorities to ensure Patient Care Services, in conjunction with the overall organization’s services are not adversely impacted upon by other internal and/or external entities or resources. The Deputy Director has significant knowledge of funding sources and methodologies including appropriations, third party collections, sharing agreement revenues, and contract and enhanced use revenue. And, is actively involved as a key member of the executive leadership councils and committees; as well as organization level discussions, decisions, and policy-making concerning the healthcare services on all matters relating to VA North Texas Health Care System.
