Daily Duties at Connecticut Department Of Correction:

In this position I was responsible for the oversight of a $112 million dollar healthcare budget that was contracted with the University of Connecticut through a Memorandum of Understanding in order to provide the delivery of medical and mental health services for a 20,000 inmate population in 18 facilities. I also was responsible for the delivery of addiction services to the inmate population in which I had a staff component of 110 addiction services staff. I provided oversight to a team who administered multi-level addiction services including groups, individual counseling sessions, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous depending on what type of institution the inmate was housed in. I was a director who established, maintained, and provided oversight for nursing practice and operations across a correctional healthcare system of 18 facilities. I was responsible for policy and program development i.e. hospice program development, infection control, DNA programming, telemedicine programming, Americans with Disability Act. Handled correspondence from inmates regarding their healthcare by investigating and responding to their concerns; corresponded and visited inmates on a quarterly basis regarding inmates that were transferred to Virginia to check on their healthcare status; represented and testified in place of the commissioner before the legislature on issues that pertained to healthcare; assisted with the preparation of the healthcare budget; hired, fired, evaluated, counseled and mentored staff; toured 18 facilities on a monthly basis in order to monitor the programs and care that was provided to the inmate population. I was also responsible to make sure that the department followed court mandates and worked with individual facilities to seek accreditation. Clinical areas included ambulatory, infirmary and dialysis settings.
