Daily Duties at Norfolk Southern Corporation:
Situation: More train crews were required than needed to perform the work needed due to how the contract with the union was generally interpreted. Some train crews received a day’s pay for as little as 3 hours of work. Action: I studied the contracts with the rail transportation unions and discovered that the railroads could require more work from many of the train crews. I suggested re-classifying trains to a different type would allow the crews to provide additional work along with their previous 3 hour assignment without additional cost to the company. I had the service instituted and when the unions complained the issue was pushed to a public law board where my position prevailed. Results: Train crews were better utilized that resulted in reduction of the number of crews required daily as well as a reduction in overtime payments.
