Daily Duties at Oklahoma State University Foundation:
I was hired as a Regional Development officer to travel to markets that were underdeveloped. At the time of my hire, OSU Foundation was in the midst of a $1 Billion dollar campaign. We knew that the goal would be met, and the campaign would be done ahead of schedule. My initial job was to begin to find new wealth for the future, my expertise. In my brief time I managed all four regions. I was assigned the Northeast and Northwest with responsibility for coordination with four unit officers in the Northeast and four in the Northwest. I also shared a coordinator that I supervised. I was given a budget to manage for travel, correspondence and any gift items. I arranged my own travel and set my own appointments, 99% cold calls for appointments. I established a very effective cold calling system, securing appointments. Two metrics were used, number of visits/year (150) and money raised ($1.5m). I was moved to the Southwest and then finished my tenure managing the Southeast U.S. I vet everyone in my region, finding many overlooked individuals that have great giving capacity. I used this skill to assist Corporate and Foundation Relations in identifying high level alumni of OSU in Corporations that did not have a giving history, providing key areas of similar interest for collaboration and strategies on approaching these individuals and companies. I interacted with all Unit and Planned Giving offices before and after travel, working with each on strategies with individuals that expressed interest in their areas. Serving as a generalist, my roles was to identify, qualify and develop strategies for future engagement.
What they like about Oklahoma State University Foundation:
Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
