Daily Duties at Lockheed Martin Is & Gs:

My first satellite program was the Global Positioning System (GPS) Block I on-orbit support. Starting as a junior engineer, I became a certified satellite engineer by the time the first Block II/IIA vehicles were launched. The 24 satellites of II/IIA that comprised the full constellation were the predecessors of the satellites on-orbit today; the very same ones that are used worldwide to provide time and location to military personnel and equipment, commercial and private aircraft, oil and gas explorers, forestry and geological engineers, and everyday folks to guide them to their destinations. My role was act as shift lead to 3-10 other engineers, planning the daily and weekly schedule of on-orbit support for up to 24 vehicles, write the documentation needed for support, monitor realtime satellite vehicle health and status, provide anomaly detection and resolution, and training of junior engineers. Operations were 24/7/365 to monitor and safeguard the GPS mission, through times of war and peace. STEP-0 is a single-satellite program to test equipment and concepts desired by the US Air Force customer. I became one of the senior Experiment Leads, co-writing plans and technical documents to the USAF concept-of-operations, then rehearsing and executing those same plans on-orbit. As COMSEC Responsible Officer (CRO), I was responsible for the payload telemetry processing area, interfacing with USAF and high-security personnel, training and maintaining records for the other 8-10 engineers working in the area. I worked my shifts in the payload processing area, as well as regular spacecraft health-and-status, providing 24/7/365 support for this program. As STEP-0 transitioned to other engineers, I was named the Program Lead Engineer for STEP-4. STEP-4 was a vehicle similar in design to STEP-0, with a different mission and different set of requirements and operations concepts. I assisted a team of engineers, payload investigators and USAF personnel to shepard this new vehicle through the Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews, meeting multiple times in different locations to review interface control documents, operations plans, and other technical documentation. I left this program before launch, eventually finding out that while the satellite did achieve orbit, it did not deploy correctly, and the mission was cancelled. Satellite Operations experience in the following programs: (most recent listed first) • STEP-4 o Program Lead Engineer during design review/development phase. o Assisted in Interface Control Document (ICD) development. o Initiated development of Concept of Operations (ConOps) launch/early orbit/checkout test plans and ground data configurations • STEP-0 o Lead Planner/Analyst during development, launch and mission operations phases. o Experiment Lead for Cat E experiment runs o Developed test documentation for Cat D/Cat E experiments o COMSEC Responsible Officer - Interface between program and Air Force security personnel o Realtime console support/analysis for satellite and payload health and status • GPS Block I and Block II/IIA o Block I mission planning and analysis, realtime vehicle support, anomaly resolution, o Block II/IIA launch and early orbit operations, vehicle checkout, constellation acceptance.
