Daily Duties at Lockheed Martin Space Operations:

My ultimate role during this satellite program was Operations Coordinator. I was the lead engineer on a shift of approximately 10-12 people, responsible for maintaining continuous operational health and status of a large (48 satellite) low-earth orbiting satellite telephony network (three separate shift teams). As Operations Coordinator, my job was to: 1) monitor the various satellites during daily operations, 2) monitor personnel controlling satellites during realtime operations, 3) maintain awareness of any anomalous indications or issues, and advise/assist in resolution of those issues, and 4) assist in planning and execution of an aggressive launch campaign. My partner the Shift Supervisor was in charge of daily operations. It was my job to act as liaison between realitime personnel, and program management/the customer, thereby allowing the Shift Supervisor to keep his/her attention on realtime operations, and not have to deal with management and customer briefings and inquiries. Some of my tasks as Operations Coordinator included: • Operations lead during launch, early orbit, payload checkout, and vehicle acceptance into constellation. • Principal interface between realtime satellite operations, ground operations personnel and the Globalstar customer • Analyze, present and recommend corrective actions to provide for continuous mission support. • Create, edit, and present supporting documentation such as operations procedures, engineering reports, system deficiency reports, current status and memoranda. • Coordinate activities, timelines and resultant documentation between operations personnel and customer. • Lead and train team members in resource management, daily operations, problem resolution, and security procedures. • Support resource scheduling and conflict resolution for global satellite tracking network. • Analysis of component level, systems integration, and large scale network operations management.

What they like about Lockheed Martin Space Operations:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
