Daily Duties at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory:

As a Hazardous Waste Specialist for both government and private research and development (R&D) projects, worked with minimal supervision while conducting the weekly waste pick-up program, bulking/packaging programs, and facility house-keeping/upkeep for the TSD (Treatment Storage and Disposal) operated by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy. Provided outstanding customer service with open two-way communications with facility occupants and functional support organizations including keeping a close working familiarity with all facility operating and R&D workspaces. Primary responsibility was to lead/coordinate transportation and shipments and to assist with conducting off-site landfill audits for assigned programs. Secondary responsibilities included procurement of, management and coordinating disposal for the facility research and development team chemical stores. Tertiary responsibilities were to serve as a Field Service Representative (FSR) providing regulatory and chemical guidance, oversight and assistance to laboratory researchers; development scientists; facilities and maintenance shops; and other project waste generators ensuring policy and procedural compliance. Anticipated costs for disposal prior to generation and minimized those costs by designing efficient collection and disposal pathways prior to waste generation. Conducted routine satellite accumulation area and <90 day accumulation area inspections and assisted research staff in resolving any deficiencies. -Demonstrated proficiency and a detailed working knowledge of both Federal and State regulations regarding waste operations and management as well as environmental compliance during the completion of assigned tasks. -Developed and maintained a positive, yet effective, working relationship at all levels interfacing with the crew, projects; functional organizations; the client and customer representatives on technical issues. -Excellent working knowledge of project management, work control, PNNL operations, training, and environmental, safety and health policies and procedures. -Prepared and developed procedures, waste stream profiles, and portfolios conducting inventories and inspections of hazardous/LL waste Treatment Storage Disposal Facilities (TSDF). -Researched and maintained a current list of chemical vendors and suppliers. Compiled and organized multiple orders, purchasing chemicals and laboratory supplies equipment, managing chemical inventories and updating the laboratories chemical management system. -Tracked, trended, updated, reconciled and reported weekly and monthly for the chemical quantities and gas cylinders on hand as well as the purchase and expenditures status from supplier. -Anticipated costs for laboratory chemical and waste disposal prior to generation and minimized those costs by designing efficient collection and disposal pathways prior to waste generation. -Coordinated and scheduled chemicals for waste and disposal pickup from multiple facilities maintaining thorough accountability for record compliance. -Conducted routine satellite accumulation area and <90 day accumulation area inspections and assisted research staff in resolving any deficiencies.
