Daily Duties at Child & Family Research Institute:
I managed a $625K research laboratory with 4 reporting personnel and 3 ongoing projects. This involved a large amount of project management as I not only performed my own research but I also supervised the research of the other lab members in addition to writing operating grants to secure funding for additional research. I successfully facilitated the merger of two collaborating laboratories to streamline research production, doubling publication output compared to the previous funding period. Since the lab was small I leveraged my network of contacts to build collaborations thus maintaining the competitive position of the lab through best practice sharing between collaborating research laboratories. I also engaged in PR activities for the lab, in particular I organized a research day visit for patients and their families suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through a liaison with the Crohn's and colitis foundation of canada (CCFC). This involved giving a 15 minute presentation at the beginning of the day to explain what types of research was being done with the money raised by the CCFC, before organizing the attendees into 3 separate groups and giving them a tour of the labs. Prior to the visit I had sought the buy-in of 6 graduate students (2 per lab) to give up their Saturday to set up a series of demonstrations in each lab (3 labs in total). As I guided each group through the labs, the students performed the demonstrations so the guests could see first hand what the money they were raising was enabling the scientists to do in order to find new therapeutic avenues to increase the current standard of care for IBD patients. From a management perspective, I trained, instructed, and reviewed performance of staff and students. Chaired monthly departmental meetings. Co-ordinated with absentee clinical leader/departmental head, administrative support staff and research personnel.
What they like about Child & Family Research Institute:
Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
