Daily Duties at Sims Metal Management Aerpspace:
I was hired to be a change agent and as the division president said " to improve the company gene pool". I was on a 2 year program to become the VP of Manufacturing. I was promoted in 10 months When I was hired, I was given the choice of fixing one of the 2 major departments, either the Turnings department or the solids department. I chose the Solids department as it appeared to be the most out of control during my initial tour 2 months earlier. It was dark, dirty, unkempt, no signs of organization, the work force appeared to have no energy and low morale. Department management did not appear to have a clue. They were looked down upon by the other departments and employees, no money had been invested for years, no employees ever transferred to the solids department. The direction I was given by the President And executive VP was simple " fix it". The solids department work flow is identical to that of the turnings department however, how those steps are accomplished is very different. The turnings department is highly automated and the workers do not come into direct contact with the material they are processing. In contrast every piece of material is touched by human hands in every process in the solids department. As a result, the department also had the highest level of injuries in the plant an average of 6 lost time accidents per year.
What they like about Sims Metal Management Aerpspace:
Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
