Daily Duties at Concordia College New York:

As a certified clinician in Behavioral Health Nursing and already an Associate Professor of Nursing, CCNY hired me in 2008 to collaborate with the Dean of Nursing in the development, implementation and accreditation of a new Second Degree, Accelerated, and Baccalaureate (BSN) Program by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, (AACN). The following year, 2009, The Commission on collegiate Nursing Education, (CC, the accrediting body of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing awarded this nursing program a five- year accreditation. The first cohort of 18 nursing students completed the program with an 84% pass rate nationally on State Boards Exams for new graduate Registered Nurses. As the expert Behavioral Health Educator, it was my first responsibility to develop a curriculum suited to the 21st century mental health needs of our society that was also in keeping with the newly developed nine “Essential Standards” required by the AACN for undergraduate programs. The Behavioral Health curriculum I developed for this program was innovative, integrating, psychiatric and therapeutic communication concepts, and experiences throughout all of the medical, surgical topics over four continuous medical/surgical components. In the final phase of the program the acute phases of mental health illnesses were focused on in seminars where students actively engaged in discussions of their comprehensive patient assessments drawing on reading and personal experiences in mentored clinical settings. In keeping with the new standards for ‘Spiritual and Cultural Competence’ among health care providers required by the Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditations, I created an innovative curriculum to facilitate nurses abilities to address these basic human needs as an integral component of nursing care in a course “Spiritual and Cultural Competence in Nursing”. In addition to lecture/discussion this course required students to reach out beyond their own comfort levels and explore different cultures, religious and spiritual, formal and informal organizations and to use art as the means of articulating what they learned. Students’ response to this experience over time has been reportedly empowering to them and to CCNY faculty as well to patients and staff in institutions where students learn. Behavioral Health Nursing is grounded in clinical experiences so to affect this new curriculum it was essential that I reach out and establish relationships with institutions and organizations where inpatient, outpatient, community and homeless mentally ill student learning opportunities could be established. At the end of five years I have engaged ten institutions/organizations and twelve Behavioral Health Clinicians as adjunct clinical faculty to mentor students in these various settings. A major component of the CCNE accreditation process is ongoing quality and evaluation. Appointed by the dean of Nursing as the Director for Quality and Evaluation, (Q & E) for the Nursing Program from its inception. I Have chaired the nursing committee for Q& E from 8/2008 – 6/2013, reviewed and analyzed indirect student data from all course and clinical evaluations, maintained an ongoing collaborative relationship with Educational Benchmarks Inc. (EBI) contracted to conduct exit interviews on all students prior to graduation based on CCNE standards, interpreted EBI reports to the Dean and Faculty for consideration in program planning, development and resource allocation and completed written annual reports on the quality and evaluation of all aspects of the Nursing Program according to the Plan for Ongoing Quality and Evaluation approved by CCNE in 2009. Each year CCNY has between 150 and 200 applicants for its Second Degree, Accelerated, BSN program for about 50 slots in Cohort IV, 2013. As the nursing program has grown the need for additional faculty has increased form three initially to seven full time faculty. The reputation of Concordia College – NY has dramatically improved as the reputation of the nursing program grows more impressive with graduates in 2011 achieving a 98% national pass for Registered Nurses on national State Boards. Nursing Students’ tuitions make a multi-million dollar contribution to Concordia College – New York’s fiscal resources as well as significantly contribute to the number of students in attendance. In 2012, Concordia began to accept traditional undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students into the program as well. In addition to my teaching and clinical coordination responsibilities over the last five years, I have participated in screening candidates for the Nursing program each spring, chaired faculty search committees and individually mentored 20 + nursing students enrolled in the program.

What they like about Concordia College New York:

A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
