Daily Duties at Indiana University:
Awarded 4 graduate assistantships over 2-year period while carrying a full graduate course load. School of Public and Environmental Affairs, 8/2001-5/2003 Worked under 2 different professors, one in public policy and one in economics. In public policy, I led small-group discussions for 20-30 students weekly in national and international policy, developed assignments, and graded tests and assignments for approximately 200 students. In economics, I graded tests and assignments and took attendance for two introductory economics classes totaling approximately 100 students. Writing Tutorial Services 8/2001 to 5/2002 I worked as one of the writing tutors, instructing international and native speakers of English in methods to develop writing and critical thinking skills. I also worked with a team of 12 other tutors to develop pamphlets for tutor training. Academic Support Center, 8/2002-12/2002 Taught 12 students for 1 semester in a 2-hour credit class on study skills. I created and executed lesson plans, including homework assignments and graded those. I collaborated with the Center director on curriculum and mentored 6 returning students. Alcohol Drug Information Center, 8/2002-5/2003 Working in conjunction with an undergraduate student, we formed and led an anti-tobacco coalition on the IUB campus, the flagship campus of more than 30,000 students for the Indiana University system. Researched effects of tobacco to develop presentations, print ads, and public service advertisements. Educated over 20 campus groups on tobacco usage via Powerpoint presentations and facilitated discussions, with the groups ranging in size from 20 to 50 people. In conjunction with Center director, started community-wide anti-tobacco coalition in the second half of the year.
