Enterprise Framework Architects were responsible for implementing all or part of a Reference Architecture by building reusable components and services. These components provided functionality that every application required. Frameworks were created for both the Java and .NET development stacks. Frameworks provided abstraction between the application-layer and either the Java VM or Microsoft CLR. There were twenty components in all. Examples included: authentication, authorization, information security, state, data access, transaction processing, caching, static data, exception handling and event handling. Unprecedented success followed the frameworks. Each contained over four million lines of programming code. This was four million lines of code that was necessary for every new application that never needed to be written. Enterprise Frameworks saved the Enterprise tens of millions of dollars annually by decreasing total-cost-of-ownership, decreasing total-time-to market, decreasing risk, while significantly increasing quality.
