Daily Duties at Illumination Technology Incorporated:

I was hired to be a lamp development engineer to Design new Lamp Types and Develop the Processes to make them. My role expanded into designing lamps, Developing process to make them, design and build the machines to make the lamps. Supervise an an engineer, and draftsman. I then was given the opportunity to supervise the building maintenance, and hire another maintenance person which reported to me. Spoke directly As the lead technical person, I would speak directly with existing and potential customers. I discussed the needs and applications with the customers and worked directly with their engineers to make the best products for their applications, with respect to what could be produced. I designed the lamp filaments, and lamp geometry, sized the glass and the leadwires, designed and had the tooling machined to process the glass. As the company grew, the draftsman was replaced with a junior engineer, who needed less supervision, and was trained and took over the technical assistance for the machine shop. Overall, I was the lead technical person, supervising 2 engineers. The operation had a chemical lab to clean filaments. As the resident chemical engineer, I took over supervision of the chem lab to help streamline the process and to ensure that the proper safety procedures were followed, and trained the operators to understand what they were working with, what was safe, and what could hurt them or other people. I designed and built expensive, high purity Xenon recovery systems, and retrofit them to the sealing furnaces, after I upgraded them. I did technical customer support, debugged the raw material issues, supervised the serviced equipment maintenance, and did process upgrades as needed to allow us to expand the product line. I also developed the part numbering system for the raw materials, and the Lamps catalogue. I developed an Indexing Bill of Material system which tied into the process flow with yields using Excel. We were able to track yields on each process step, and feed that information back into the spreadsheet, to give the information to the materials department so they could better order materials, and for the supervisor, who needed to know that we needed to wind 3000 lamp filaments to make 1000 lamps so we could make a more streamlined operation and more easily meet our delivery dates without over producing parts to meet our goals.

The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
