Daily Duties at Kings Mountain Hospital:

Manager of Medical surgical unit and ICU. Managed staffing, co-ordination of schedules, implementation of polices and procedures for critical care patients, staff hiring, interviews, evaluations and daily operation of units. The job required long hours at times because I was the only manger of these units. At night there was a house supervisor who covered the entire small hospital. My units of management consisted of a 20-25 bed step down unit with a staff of day and night nurses, techs and unit secretaries to care for the patient. The nursing ration was 4-6 patients per nurse. Because this was a small hospital these nurses had to wear many hats, such as doing EKG's, starting IV's and lab draws. On this unit I did the schedule and helped promote self scheduling after developing the schedule guidelines. I helped educate the staff on assessment skills, and interventions. Often the staff were new graduates who I would work along side of to mentor and help foster independent growth. It was a mix of less acute cardiac, respiratory and medical patients. I reported directly to the Director of Nursing. I also was responsible for daily operations of each unit which may of been dealing with physician or family issues. I was also on several committees such as the infection control, patient conferences with physicians, and nursing committees. I was also the nurse manager of this facilities 6 bed ICU/CCU unit. There were 3 nurses per shift and a secretary or nurses aide in the unit. These patients were usually admitted from the emergency room. Most of these patients had cardiac or respiratory issues. We managed ventilators, and swan ganz catheters which helped managed to patients hemodynamic state. Having come from a larger hospital in Florida to this small facility I was able to bring and offer alot of updated skills and interventions that also required education of the staff. I developed a 40 hour critical care course covering all body systems that I taught to all of the acute care nurses in this facility. I worked with the facility's physicians to update policies and develop patient care tracts based on national recognized standards of care. This consisted of order sets and care plans that promoted optimal and consistent care for the patient. I worked along side of these ICU?CCU nurses in the department as needed to educate, support and help foster optimal patient outcomes.
