A pharmacy manager typically oversees the work of subordinates, ensuring that employees perform tasks in accordance with corporate policies, industry practices and safety rules. The manager combines effective communication skills with analytical dexterity to ensure that personnel uphold ethical and professional values in day-to-day activities. These include advising patients on the most appropriate dosage for medications and recommending alternative medications after discussing with physicians. Equally important, pharmacy supervisors engage in hiring and termination activities along with periodic appraisal processes. As such, they are the go-to people when it comes to selecting, retaining and promoting highly performing pharmacy personnel. Operating Duties • A pharmacy manager's operational functions are diverse. Managers review prescriptions to ensure accuracy, verify the necessary ingredients and evaluate their suitability. They provide specialized services to help patients manage conditions such as diabetes, asthma and smoking cessation, and they advise customers on the selection of medical brands. Pharmacy supervisors also maintain records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles and charge file systems. They plan, implement and oversee procedures for mixing, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals, and they teach pharmacy students serving as interns. Regulatory Responsibilities • Regulatory responsibilities remain the purview of pharmacy managers, especially when it comes to ensuring that patients receive medications in accordance with physicians' prescriptions. Managers take subordinates under their wings, teaching them the ropes of the profession and explaining why regulatory compliance is cardinal. The most important regulations to which pharmacy managers must conform include U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines, Department of Health and Human Services rules and Occupational Safety and Health Administration directives Oversees employees, including directing, training and counseling personnel. Manages operations including buying, merchandising and maintaining equipment. Oversees and participates in dispensing prescription medications: measuring, labeling, checking for drug interactions, verifying with physicians and selecting substitutions when necessary. Acts as Pharmacist-In-Charge, point of contact for regulatory, legal, third party insurance companies and audit situations. Monitors pharmacy to ensure complete legal compliance. Monitors department performance and reviews department financials as pharmacy manager. Provides and ensures prompt and courteous member service. Counsels members on proper medication usage. Responds to customer concerns using problem solving skills, tact and discretion. DAILY REPSONSIBILITIES Develop, coach, counsel and direct pharmacy personnel. Monitor employee performance. Oversees the pharmacy employment process by making recommendations to supervisor for hiring, promoting and terminating. Participate in pharmacy employee evaluations Implement and uphold pharmacy security, safety and standards of practice. Coordinate pharmacy schedule. Review pharmacy sales, expense and productivity figures. Monitor department profit and loss and adjust plans as necessary. Monitor department cleanliness. Maintains professional appearance of department. Counsel patients on proper medication usage. Respond to customer concerns, questions and problems regarding prescriptions, merchandise and services. Maintain proper inventory levels and accurate records of merchandise. Oversee perpetual inventory of Schedule II controlled substances Coordinate maintenance and repair of equipment. Exercise discretion and confidentiality with all employee and patient information. Ensure department provides prompt and courteous customer service to members, employees and vendors. Unselfishly serves others and assists members, employees and vendors in a prompt and efficient manner • The main responsibility of the pharmacy manager is to plan direct modify and revise the pharmacy procedures and dealings. • The pharmacy manager is responsible to keep a check that the pharmacy is open for the trade and handling the prescriptions during the registered opening duration. • It is the duty of the manager to see that the pharmacist is present on the premises all throughout the working hours to provide the pharmacy service when required. • The manager is the person responsible for assigning assisting and supervising the work of the technical personals and professionals in compounding handling and mixing an extensive variety of pharmaceutical drugs used for or sold to the patients. • The manager is required to keep a check on the requisitions of the supply’s which our required and to review analyze and be aware of the new medical preparations which our being recommended for the use of patients in order to provide full assistance to the hospital staff. • The pharmacy manager is responsible to establish a standard system for keeping the records of the medicines and account of the payments and dues payments received and due and all the other accounting information relating to the pharmacy. • The manager is held with responsibility for the preparation of annual budget of the pharmacy. • The pharmacy manager supervises and helps the staff in taking and recording the inventories of the pharmaceutical nature. • It is the duty of the pharmacist manager to ensure that the staff complies with proper standards of personal hygiene, appearance and presentation. Review entire pharmacy orders filled by respective subordinates. Prepare hours schedule for subordinates along with time off and timesheets submission to HR essential for payroll processing. Plan, organize and supervise all pharmacy functionalities and activities. Structure and initiate innovative pharmacy administrative measures. Set priorities to make pharmacy activities more proactive and qualitative. Answer and respond to client inquiries. Resolve problems arising in pharmacy administration. Supervise entire inventory management related to pharmacy. Interact and maintain positive customer relations with respect to correspondence support and back office phone. Identify opportunities to add value to customers catered by suggesting varied sale items benefiting customer. Verify record’s accuracy either daily or weekly commensurate to prescription volume.
