Daily Duties at New York City Department Of Education:

Teaching students with sever cognitive and physical disabilities. Assessed student’s abilities to create an individual education plan. Created 1:1 individualized workstations for 6-12 students. Assessed students on a state level (NYSAA: New York State Alternate Assessment) for four different grade levels. Increased students reading abilities through reading programs such as Edmark. Created data forms to track student progression. Took data on student’s academic and behavior to monitor students performance. Used data to create individual goals for students. Created school wide curriculum that met learning needs of students with disabilities by using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic teaching techniques. Work with therapist (speech, physical, occupational, and counseling) and students families to help students reach their full potential in communication, socialization, behavior and physical areas. Scheduled and managed student’s therapy sessions. Managed and trained 2-4 teacher assistance each school year on teaching strategies and behavior interventions. Managed classroom needs such as staff and student scheduling, supplies and education materials. Assessed students to evaluate and determine what services they needed. Counseled and assisted families to assure student services were appropriate and provided within school or home setting. Conducted informational interviews both face to face and using a questionnaire with families to assess their child’s wants and needs. Communicate with families by letters, telephone, and in person. Advocated for student needs in services and/or additional services in PPC (Pupil Personnel Committee) meetings. Provide training and direct supervision to support staff such as Teacher Assistance. Work in team based environment with administration, therapists, and families. Communicate to family’s student progress and areas of concern. Prepared and created materials for student lessons. Used Power Point to teach up to date information about education and students with disabilities for teacher trainings. Used Power Point for Smartboard interactive lessons for students. Used Microsoft Word for lesson planning: made template to show the different parts of a lesson (whole group and small groups) and how each lesson was differentiated for each student. Met with staff members in different committees to make academic pacing calendars, introduce new teaching programs, and evaluate student services. While participating in these different comities I was part of the decision making process (e.g. how learning standards would be measured with students with disabilities). In these meetings I also participated in taking minutes, putting information and data into student/teacher database ARIS (Achievement Reporting and Innovation System), and following up with teachers and other staff members to ensure that our decisions and/or trainings were being implemented.
