Daily Duties at Urs Corporation:
Manager of the Automation department with up to 11 direct reports at the Pine Bluff Chemical Demilitarization Facility (PBCDF). I had full responsibility for the condition of the control systems at the site which included 25,000 I/O points, 21 Large PLC controllers, 40 Medium PLC-controllers, 17 operator Consoles, and 500+ control screens. My duties included directing direct reports in developing and implementing control system modifications, upgrades, and replacements while tracking changes and maintaining strict configuration control. My responsibilities also included hiring, coaching, team building, training, scheduling, and development of the automation team to support site operations on a 24/7 basis. Systems included an array of PLC, HMI, and distributed control systems as well as an extensive Oracle based data collection and historian system. As part of the facility management team I provided direct support to Engineering, Environmental, Operations, and Safety departments to help insure safe and compliant operations. My daily functions consisted of reviewing operations logs from night shift looking for upset conditions and or problems that may have developed overnight. Attending morning status review meetings with department heads to discuss new developments and provide updates on work in progress. Meeting with my direct reports to pass on relevant information, changes in focus, and new developments, and receiving updates on work in progress. Administrative work including: Development of “condition reports” which documented system upsets, unexpected conditions, or safety or environmental concerns that fell under my jurisdiction. These reports were very detailed documenting what happened, what was the root cause, and corrective actions needed to be taken to permanently resolve the issue. I was also responsible for generating a biweekly systems status and readiness report, which included hardware, software personnel, and training. This report required daily input. Responding to almost daily request for data on some plant system or operation that was needed to solve a problem or provide data to the state or regulatory agencies. Work planning, and personnel scheduling. Could not attend all meetings I was invited to but usually made time for the High priority ones. Usually devoted some time to hiring and or personnel behavior development and corrective actions. Attended weekly engineering department meetings and attended evening plant status review meeting to discuss night shift or weekend work and expectations.
