Daily Duties at Fl Dept. Of Corrections:
Working half time while I was going to graduate school, I was responsible for 11 reports in the community corrections section that I will briefly describe. During this period I had to teach myself the basics of SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) which is a highly sophisticated piece of data analysis software. I was familiar with computer programming so learning it was not incredible difficult. After mastering the basics of the system, our bureau chief signed me up to take a web-based intermediate SAS training course. Learned how to navigate & use complex database programs (Excel/Access) and write multiple tab & sheet formulas for large reports. Regression analysis of the Sentencing Guidelines Data base - Analyzed our guidelines database to observe which factors predict the sentence lengths of offenders. This project used multiple (OLS) regression and logistic regression with built in propensity scores controlling for an offender going to prison. Weapons report - Report alerting respective probation officers if those under their supervision attempted to purchase weapons. Sentence structure / Days to data entry – compliance report detailing data lag that existing between receipt and entry of data in community corrections offices. Interstate compact - 3 reports which function to monitor the population supervised in other states and vice versa. County Jail Report – Report required by Florida statute, details the number of offenders being held in all Florida county jails. This report required me to work as a liaison between the department and county jails, verifying counts of county jail populations and mail it out to each county jail, along with an annual report at the end of each fiscal year. In prison & on supervision report - Report the number of detainees which are on supervision but also serving a prison sentence. This report is used for a variety of bureaucratic reasons, most notably that these individuals are not marked as absconders. Movement report - Details the movements made by offenders across type of supervision, offense type, and region. FDLE DNA - Verifies DNA is drawn from individuals whom are statutorily required to do so. Finally I volunteered to serve as an analyst for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). During emergencies (hurricanes, wildfires, disturbances, etc.) the EOC is activated and key staff report to a central room where departmental emergency response is carried out. This response typically involved moving inmates out of an affected area, ensuring staff/family safety, organizing clean-up efforts, and responding to any requests from the State Emergency Operations Center. During this time I served to develop briefings that would be reported to the Secretary of the DOC. They consisted of data from the emergency management application and conversations that occurred in the EOC. Working in this atmosphere taught me to work efficiently and effectively under highly stressful conditions.
What they like about Fl Dept. Of Corrections:
A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
