Daily Duties at Fl Dept. Of Corrections:

Due to the dedication and enthusiasm I showed in learning SAS and working for the bureau in general, I was promoted to a full-time position and moved to the most demanding section, the inmate section. My workload consisted of five monthly reports and various ad hoc reports submitted from across the world. During this period of time, I became a better SAS analyst/programmer by learning to use sophisticated procedures like SQL, LOGISTIC, and REG. I also learned to debug my errors and write code in an easily readable fashion as well as import/export data from a wide variety of sources into whatever data type was needed by our customers. Further, I constantly sought to learn more about our data system by learning everything I could about CDC, our mainframe database viewing platform. Learning to use this system allowed me to better understand how our data was stored and how to code for potential obstacles. I served as lead analyst on the substance abuse recidivism work group responsible for the literature review section of the final report. Knowing that our leadership sought empirical data to support their positions I organized our unit, which consisted of three other members and myself, to complete a meta-analysis on the topic. This required pulling studies on the topic for the last 20 years and compiling their findings in a spreadsheet which I programmed formulas to control for their sample sizes and significance level. I was an assisting analyst for the annual report issued to the state legislature duties included: running code, verifying the validity of data, and assisting in the display of the final report. I was lead analyst on the offense code committee which coordinated departmental efforts to enact departmental coding action in response to the new laws passed by the state legislature. This required me to network with virtually every other bureau in the department to ensure that all required codes for our mainframe system are added along with assisting in the meanings of those codes fit the legislative intent of the law. I was a lead analyst for the recidivism workgroup using survival analysis and regression to study inmate recidivism. I was an assisting analyst for our COTAS (Correctional Offender Trends Analysis System) project using proportional hazards regression models to predict inmate disruption in a prison setting. I also assisted in the evaluation of research proposals sent into the department. I continued to work in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). However, my duties expanded to that of assistant planning chief and I assisted with operational plans and acted as the display analyst. I was responsible for two screens in the front of the room. The information displayed varied from simple informational data to hurricane forecasting which was used to determine facility evacuation. Other information included image overlays, weather radar, traffic information, and GPS data to identify support units.

What they like about Fl Dept. Of Corrections:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
