Daily Duties at Fl Dept. Of Corrections:
Following two years as a junior analyst, I was promoted to senior analyst and moved to the Programs section. I was placed with a higher daily workload that included four weekly, six monthly, six quarterly, eleven annual, and various ad hoc reports submitted from across the world. I continued to learn to become a better SAS programmer and data analyst. I learned a variety of new techniques including how to export an entire report to different tabs on an excel spreadsheet, eliminating many hours of repetition from my workday. I was appointed the lead recidivism analyst. In this capacity I was responsible for running all of the datasets to ensure the validity of 14 years of data pulling it from a wide variety of different sources. Specifically, I had to ensure that each offender’s arrival to prison, subsequent release, and possible return to prison and offense types along with a host of other data were treated as individual data points. Each of these data points came from different libraries; each of which were separated by fiscal year, so I had to carefully ensure that the resulting code I inherited and any new code I wrote complimented each other with respect to reliability and validity. Further, I was made in charge of running all survival and regression analysis associated with all reports on recidivism from our bureau. I also was made in charge of the substance abuse annual report, an 87 pg document that required high attention to detail and the ability to read through thousands of lines of code and update appropriately. I stayed on as a member of the annual report team however my duties switched to the program section of the report. I remained the lead analyst on the offense code committee described earlier. I remained as an assisting analyst for our COTAS (Correctional Offender Trends Analysis System) project using proportional hazards regression to predict inmate disruption in a prison setting. I evaluated research proposals sent into the department. I was promoted to Planning Chief in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Under this capacity I was responsible for managing the submittal of operational plans and briefings to the Secretary of the DOC. I was also responsible for organizing and managing conference calls and webinars. This position required me to travel to the FL state EOC for training and to work at times as a liaison with the state EOC.
What they like about Fl Dept. Of Corrections:
A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
