Daily Duties at Elvcr Inc. (Present):
I manage 16 workers in four departments, Production, Maintenance, Sorting, Shipping & Receiving. The production department consists of 7 workers and three hydraulic cutting machines. The Sorting department consists of 6 workers and it is where we check in inbound shipments for pricing, and inventory purposes. The Maintenance department consists of 1 worker and tools and equipment necessary to repair all of the machines. The Shipping & Receiving department consist of 2 workers and three forklifts and other material handling equipment. The very first thing we do in the mornings is to have a safety tailgate meetings where we take 15 min and discuss safety issues and review safety programs. I encourage workers to participate and inform me of any new safety issues or breakdowns. The daily operations consists of production control, I survey the current inventory and decide which products will be cut next and schedule the production for each machine. I schedule the next shipments that is to be checked in for both sorting crews. I address any manpower issues and decide where we need additional help. The Maintenance department crucial and it is where I do the majority of training. Maintenance in this business is very specialized, especially the hydraulic cutters. I schedule all the inbound shipments, the supply chain. I also schedule all outbound shipments and coordinate with accounting for optimum cash flow. I provide accounting with packing lists for the shipments as well as BOL and material cost for each shipment. Each year I submit a Operational Budget based on projected costs for the plant. I am also responsible for cost analysis on any new projects or machines. Kaizan is a Japanese word meaning continuous improvement, I practice this all of the time. I am never satisfied with how we are doing things. I am always trying to improve our processes. The worst reason for doing something a certain way, is because we have always done it that way. The Toyota Group of companies have a cleanliness program they call "5S", it is a systematic way of cleaning the work environment and keeping it clean. This 5S program also ties into the safety programs, because a clean environment is a safer environment. I conduct weekly safety meeting that are more in-depth that the tailgate meetings where I discuss and train workers on subjects such as MSDS, LOTO, Blood Bourne Pathogens, Forklift Safety, Respiratory program, Hearing conservation, and Stored Energy Awareness programs. I am responsible for the Risk Assessment Program is done every year with a regional safety director from Toyota corporate. It is a comprehensive site specific evaluation of the facility and equipment, that encompasses safety, environmental, and ergonomic issues.
