Daily Duties at Jewish Home Lifecare, Manhattan (Formerly Jewish Home And Hospital):
Sub-acute rehabilitation, patient stays varied from 3 weeks to 9 months or more. Patient population consisted of persons with neurological, orthopedic, cardiac conditions and dementia. Responsible for intake evaluations consisting of cognitive, physical status, ADL status, visual-perceptual status, feeding, kitchen, cooking, bed mobility, transfers, wheelchair needs and home safety evaluation. Responsible for 8-10 patient caseload per day plus evaluation; supervised COTAs. Recommended wheelchair positioning, provided wheelchair training, safety and training in falls prevention. Established ADL routines on the units and trained nurse's aides and families as well as health aides in attendance. Fabricated therapeutic equipment and splints. As part of discharge planning traveled with patients to their homes to evaluate equipment needs, followed up with DME purchases, provided training (toilet/shower transfers, bathing training, car transfers, kitchen training). Assisted OT director with established feeding group for patients with CVA, TBI, Parkinsons’ and Arthritis. Key participant in interdisciplinary meetings and family meetings. Responsible for visual evaluations and helped establish OT department visual evaluation procedures. Editor Fieldwork Manual and Department of Occupational Therapy Evaluation Procedures. Trained 3-4 occupational therapy students a year and was a key participant to help make JHH OT department an important teaching ground for students across the country and from Canada.
