Daily Duties at New York University, Center For Neural Science:
Provided mathematical and computational modeling support for projects funded by National Institute of Mental Health on auditory neurons. Studied models of low frequency sound localization in auditory system of mammals. Models that use Poisson stochastic inputs are constructed to relate sound intensity to the source location. Specific projects are: - Develop a stochastic model for studying sound localization phenomenon at low frequencies. - Investigate the excitability due to synaptic excitatory and inhibitory inputs in neural models. - Achieve faster firing rates of synchronization in networks of mutually coupled neurons. Used C++ and C coding to implement integration methods based on fourth order Runge-Kutta. Networks were coupled using sparse matrices. Discovered a new excitability phenomenon: post-inhibitory facilitation. Mathematically modeled single as well as coupled neurons using Hodgkin-Huxley, Morris-Lecar, FitzHugh-Nagumo, and Integrate-and-fire models. Collaborated with experimentalists on the dynamics of auditory neurons. The above projects resulted in three peer-reviewed publications, and a number of conference presentations.
