Daily Duties at State Farm Insurance:

The described duties of this position were not clear up front. I was told I would manage the Agency Recruiting program in the office I was located in. I was told to hire support staff within my budget to assist, and I was left from there to figure it out on my own by reading a manual. What this job actually involved was the following; managing staff, delegating tasks, contacting agency management for assistance and involvement in training activities, counseling agency candidates and assist with training activity, work with human resources and marketing departments in the recruiting process, coordinate my program to align with the other recruiting programs in the region, maintain relationships with department management as well as the executive office and agency executives to maintain the credibility of the program, recruiting candidates inside and outside the company, maintain the training and recruiting on preplanned schedules, maintain supplies for training and recruiting, maintain a business plan for my department, put in many hours after normal work hours counseling candidates and taking them to dinners and planning events to celebrate milestones during training, a lot of travel between offices which included overnight stays, and take notes on what is working and what is not so that changes can be made for future waves of recruits and possible changes to the overall training program. My team was run by a Superintendent. Additionally, there were ten team members, including myself. There was one additional supervisor besides myself who was housed in another office where the Superintendent was, I was in my own office, with my support staff only. There were two more Individual Contributors on the team and six support staff. Of that, I managed just one support staff at the time because that is all my budget would allow.

What they like about State Farm Insurance:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
