Daily Duties at Queen's Medical Center:
Worked in Same Day Surgery department, participating in the care of pre and post op patients, which consisted of ten pre op and ten post op beds. Approximately a total of twelve RNs worked staggered shifts with two RNs coming in from 0930-1900 as relief nurses. Nurses rotated between various areas in the department. The department also had an area for eye laser procedures, pain management procedure, electrical shock treatments, and administration of nerve blocks in preparation for surgery. Nurses had to participate in on-call availability for emergency surgeries approximately twice per month. Responsible for recovery of Phase I and Phase II post op recovery of patients, as well as recovery of post electrical shock patients and pain management patients, stabilizing there condition until safe to be discharged home. Discharge instructions were provided for patient and escort. Coordinated transportation home. Maintained patient safety. Followed ASPAN protocol and standards of care. Assessed and treated pain and nausea/vomiting. Responsible for maintaining equipment in each work area.
