Daily Duties at Tufts University Computer Science Department:

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, my job was to grade assignments, select and construct computational questions for problem sets, design software projects for students to do on their own, proctor exams and assist with lecturing duties. On several occasions, my host professor was out of the facility and I was asked to give the days lecture based on her prepared notes. I selected problems from the course text book that would be appropriate for enriching and testing the students' understanding of the material and on two occasions I developed original assignments (software programs that perform certain tasks). I was a TA for computer science classes; assignments were to write programs which demonstrated the concepts covered in the reading and lectures. My job was to research the material and divine programs which would be useful in illustrating the topics unique to the class, yet would be of scope such that undergraduate students could write them (program them) given their limited exposure to the subject. I led biweekly meetings with my undergraduate TA's to discuss the current course material, ensure they understood the problems currently assigned to the students, and develop a rubric for grading homework, programming assignments, and exams.

What they like about Tufts University Computer Science Department:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
