Daily Duties at The Ohio State Medical Center James Cancer Hospital:
Mentor, educate, staff on evidence-based care of the adult with cancer. Facilitate nursing staff participation in daily trans disciplinary rounds. Orient to new equipment; arrange for or provide education on new medications and clinical trials; provide education on nursing management of side effects and complications of chemotherapy and biotherapy; role model professional nursing care and promotion of teamwork; help staff to recognize oncologic emergencies and advocate for timely, appropriate care when necessary. Assist with assessment and plan of care development for complex patients/families. Advocate for patients and staff when needed to secure orders for adequate pain management, and in situations with ethical dilemmas, barriers to accessing care (insurance issues). Promote application/assimilation of evidence based practice/ research findings into plans of care. Facilitate accurate communication between patient/family and care team. Facilitate/contribute to process changes required to consistently achieve quality outcomes. Promote organizational initiatives requiring change. Educate/ assist nurses with use of new equipment, such as CHG impregnated dressings, fecal incontinence devices and care of patients receiving brachytherapy (not leukemics, but admitted to hematology unit for use of lead-lined room.
