Daily Duties at Adaptec, External Storage:

Adaptec was a strong company in IO technology and pioneered SCSI controllers for many years. Due to the competitive market, they wanted to extend their business into higher margin products in the storage subsystems. In 1995, the company created an external storage division in CO that started building SCSI based controllers for custom enclosures. With positive business horizon, Adaptec decided to expand their external storage division. They were looking for developers with system expertise since the company foundation was mostly on ASIC and embedded FW design. They hired me as a lead system engineer to help with this effort. • Architected and designed mid- to high-end RAID controllers and bridge subsystems. Designed a high performance RAID controller, configurable to run as a SCSI-SCSI, and FC-SCSI. Designed fault tolerant active/active failover architecture providing a high performance cache coherency link between two RAID controllers using patented architectures to achieve best performance at lowest cost. • Designed multiple platforms for architecture verification and performance analysis of internal ASIC designs that perform functions such as high-speed SDRAM memory controller and PCI/PCI bridges. Responsible for design documents such as hardware specification, hardware programming interface specification; wrote white papers for hot plug and live insertion, active/active failover. • Utilized advanced development tools such as Verilog and other HDL languages and their simulation tools, layout and mechanical tools with high-speed CPLD packages. • Researched and documented the differences between LVDS and HVDS signals and proposed a solution. Studied SCSI termination issues on various design and recommended optimal design methods. • Led through many manufacturability issues with large boards, worked with enclosure companies for integration of the RAID controllers into their systems. • Completed several end to end PCB designs, schematics, logic design, board design, and manufacturing.

What they like about Adaptec, External Storage:

A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
