Daily Duties at Copan Systems (Sgi):
A start-up that had a concept of massive array of low cost SATA disks to be used as a large rack-able system to overcome the limitations of addressability of parallel SCSI and RAID technology. The design goal was to create a disk-based solution to replace traditional tape backup systems. This was a conceptual system representation and they hired me to develop and define the system architecture. • Defined the components of the systems, created the system IO and the queue model, analyzed the performance requirements for each subsystem. • Selected a CPU subsystem with the proper MAID software and management that is cost optimal to compete with tape at higher performance than tape. Completed the reference design. • In charge of getting the documentation and requirements, worked closely with the VP of engineering and the CTO. Received approval to pull a team together for further investigation and development. I helped to hire a team of ASIC designers to start analyzing the stack of interaction between the software and layers of hardware to identify the design complexity, timelines, feasibility, and based on that determine the type of firmware and software skills required to implement the MAID technology. • Coordinated the various teams to work through all the logistics and issues to understand the tradeoffs we had to make to meet the design criteria/specifications. Based on this and the cost targets, had to identify the lowest cost hardware that still meets the performance and I/O latency requirements. • Developed specifications of various complex PCBs, including hardware specification. Designed the SATA drive enclosure, defining the high speed interconnect and hardware requirements. Designed the CPU subsystem and DDR SDRAM memory interface. Designed all board power distribution and DC/DC converters and system power supply requirements
What they like about Copan Systems (Sgi):
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
