Daily Duties at Lakewood Regional Medical Center:
I worked primarily on the evening shift at Lakewood. Since we did have a busy ER that occasionaly received trauma along with the other tech on evenings we set up a system where one of us would respond to a trauma call while the other prepared to set up the operating room. Trauma consisted of car accidents, gunshot wounds etc plus we seemed to get a lot of aortic aneurysms. Since we were a relatively small hospital usually on the evening there was not an assistant for many of the cases such as exploratory surgery which then required that the scrub also serve as the assistant. I also became the scrub exclusively assigned to our three neuro surgeons since their scrub had quit to work for an ortho group. I also developed statistics programs starting out on an Atari 800 that in 15 or so minutes produced the information that before had taken two people two days to produce. I designed my own forms and entered the data every night for the previous day during free time. I was then approached by the OB head nurse as to whether I could write a program to justify her staffing needs to prove how many nurses she needed to cover her floor. I linked it to how many patients were in labor vs post partum and linked it to hourly nurse needs.
What they like about Lakewood Regional Medical Center:
Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
