Daily Duties at American Drum Line Association:

complete oversight, P&L, organize annual budgets, select sites for competitions, negotiate contracts for each site, hire and train the adjudication staff, design & implement rules, regulations and scoring criteria. When we started this program, no such activities existed. Our first year we had only 9 schools involved. We contracted with local musicians and trained them to be adjudicators and established a methodology for three areas of performance: music, general effect and execution. Each of these ‘captions’ was then dialogued for details of the performance review. Each adjudicator was responsible to watch and listen to each drum line performance and during the performance, dictate comments into a cassette recorder. We presented/hosted 5 events per season, working with local high school band directors that would secure their facilities for an event. When I was elected as President in 2000, we transitioned from outside performances to ‘inside the gym’ performance for all venues. We host up to 10 events per season and sponsor a 2day championship event that allows for over 120 member drum lines to participate. What we have accomplished is that we now facilitate more events and more members with less effort and less cost. Each of the show sites average between $5,000-$7,000 profit per event. This is especially important due to the fact that school music programs have suffered tremendously year after year, losing funding to athletic programs. And this is their money to keep. We provide a turn-key event with a 36 page manual that walks them through the important steps to a successfully event. We have encouraged this art form to our constituents to the point that there are now over 25 associations like us across the US.

What they like about American Drum Line Association:

A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
