Daily Duties at Verizon:
I have been employed at Verizon for 32+ years. The past 10+ years at Verizon I have been a Software Engineer and Specialist-Application Development in the National Business Billing Engine (NBBE) organization. Please note that my first 15+ years with Verizon (former New Jersey Bell which became Bell Atlantic) I was a COBOL developer. However, the past 10+ years or so, I had limited opportunities in writing or developing new COBOL programs. I have been the primary support POC for the entire NBBE application. I provided support to the other NBBE applications as well. Over the past 7+ years, I maintained inventory control of all NBBE Media development and Production support deliveries to ensure the release elements (i.e., COBOL and/or DB2 Table changes) met the standards and guidelines as outlined by upper management. I managed many of the release implementations and made myself available almost around the clock to support emergency implementations. In addition, I worked directly with the Quality Billing Center (BC), Configuration Management (CM), and Integration Testing Organization (ITO) staff behind the scenes to ensure delivery modules were tested, moved, staged, and contained all needed traceability for approval and implementation. These task required a lot of coordination and patience. Lastly, I managed all of the data security requests, RACF changes, and security issues for the entire NBBE team. I routinely participated in all types of audits including: Security, Sarbanes Oxley, VAST, and CM. Also, I maintained inventory of the Media delivery environments, performed environment certifications, and preformed the monthly VZ450 spec change (COBOL monthly updates).
What they like about Verizon:
A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
