Daily Duties at Naval Research Laboratory:

I crystallized powder samples then determined their three-dimensional structures via x-ray diffraction. I used software programs to analyze the packing of these molecules and subsequently created figured and tables. I summarized my work and corresponded my results with my advisor and collaborators. I created crystallographic information files (cif) for each sample and verified they were correct and complete. Additionally, I helped maintain our in house database containing information on all our samples. I maintained the cleanliness of our laboratory space and reported when new materials needed to be purchased. I monitored our two diffractometers to make sure they were in proper working condition.

What they like about Naval Research Laboratory:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
