Daily Duties at Bemidji State University:

Administer, recruit for, and direct the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra composed of talents and students and community members. The BSO (under the aegis Bemidji State University) performed 3 or 4 concerts on and off campus and is an integral part of the cultural tapestry of this northern Minnesota city. The Orchestra Board of the BSO (which I formed) assisted in publicity and planning long ranging goals. The Board consisted of community members and students who important in spreading the word that Bemidji indeed had a fine Symphony Orchestra. Through positive feedback from the Press, the BSO grew impressively under my direction. I was their first full time conductor and today has grown to be its own separate cultural institution. Started Guest Soloist Series (pianist Dr. Jack Winerock, University of Kansas resident artist, others). Commissioned Minneapolis composer, Dr. Janika Vandervelde, to write Journey to the End of the Shaking Lands, a composition in honor of the orchestra's 50th Anniversary (On campus residency and premiere: April 8-10, 1988). Increased orchestra's budget through fund raising and grant writing (I basically had no budget and started from scratch). Organized the first Weekend for High School String Players (April 4-5, 1987). Initiated Kinder-Concert Series. All these activities brought local and regional attention the Orchestra and to the Music Department. They involved the community and the Orchestra provided a sense of civic pride. These activities brought more students to campus and as a result brought more talent music majors to the Department. It put the music department on the map because we were beginning to garnish praise and positive publicity. If you don’t engage your students, the University, and the community regarding your program it will never grow. You must be a strong believer and work until the job is done; and the job is NEVER done.

What they like about Bemidji State University:

A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
