Daily Duties at Virginia Department Of Conservation & Recreation:
Managed program’s staff, finances, and services. Primary roles were to act as liaison between FEMA and local governments in Virginia, assist local floodplain administrators, and address floodplain management issues relevant to the Commonwealth. • Prepared and managed federal grants used for development of the Program’s annual strategic plans, on-going program operations, assistance to local floodplain administrators, and map modernization for the Commonwealth. • Collaborated with FEMA and other Region 3 NFIP State Coordinators semi-annually to address new initiatives, issues with policies and regulations, programmatic procedures, and NFIP community compliance issues. • Utilized floodplain management expertise to coordinate technical, planning, and programmatic assistance to local floodplain administrators and citizens developing within flood hazard areas. • Conducted workshops and presentations statewide that addressed NFIP and flood hazard mapping concepts. • Provided guidance to NFIP communities for Community Rating System applications and re-certifications. • Supervised and mentored three professional staff positions. • Performed oversight, permit review, and technical consultation for state-owned facilities constructed in the regulatory flood hazard areas of the Commonwealth. • Assisted state and local officials during flooding disaster responses to address floodplain management issues. • Provided support for nine flooding disaster responses that resulted from hurricanes, tropical storms, and other severe rainfall events. Conducted damage assessments for local structures and surveyed targeted buildings in impacted communities; developed Damage Assessment Reports for targeted structures; spoke at community officials and public meetings; assisted with the planning and delivery of workshops for local officials. • Advised floodplain administrators on flood hazard reduction strategies and conducted plan reviews during their development of hazard mitigation plans and floodplain management plans. • Conducted reviews as part of the planning and development team for Virginia’s statewide Hazard Mitigation Plan.
