Daily Duties at Central Liquors:
As a part-time marketing director and wine specialist for Central Liquors - a fixture of the DC small business community since 1934 - my focus was on assisting the new owners in restoring Central's popularity and profitability after years of bad management and poor customer service had tarnished its reputation and threatened its viability. My job as a marketing director was to develop direct marketing strategies to increase customer awareness of Central's new image and mission and to create promotions and incentives that would increase sales and customer traffic, engagement, and retention. I also worked to optimize product marketing through experimenting with product displays and positioning within the store. As a wine specialist, my job was to increase wine sales by engaging our customers and helping them to comfortably navigate and choose from our large, and often daunting, wine selection. I did so very well and achieved high sales numbers and commissions as well as consistent positive feedback from customers regarding my assistance. I also used the information that I gathered from discussions with customers to work with our distributors to adjust our inventory to better reflect the tastes and needs of our clientele. Beyond marketing, hand-selling products, collaborating with distillers and distributors, and hosting tastings, I helped manage Central's inventory and performed various administrative tasks.
What they like about Central Liquors:
A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
