Daily Duties at Pricewaterhouse Coopers:

I was originally hired into this group because of my marketing background. The group was originally called Product Development, and our main focus was to create “tax products” for corporate clients. Sarbanes-Oxley changed this, and as a tax accounting firm, we were no longer able to sell or create “tax products”. The group was forced to change its focus to a knowledge management role. It was at this point in my career where I made the shift to a more technology-focused role. The Tax Knowledge Management Group owned a number of websites that were managed by a contractor. My boss found out that I knew a bit of HTML, so he asked me to update the content of the websites to reflect changes in tax policy, because as it turned out, I was faster and cheaper than the contractor. As I got more involved in the management of these sites, my boss ended the relationship with the contractor, and I became the sole manager of these websites. As my technology-focused role expanded, I was sent to take classes in Flash, JavaScript, Adobe PhotoShop and Lotus Notes (PwC is a Lotus Notes-based organization). Working with tax lawyers and CPAs, who acted as the subject matter experts, I created a number of knowledge management-focused web sites, Flash-based tools, and Lotus Notes databases to disseminate changes in tax policy to the rest of the PwC Tax Practice around the country (and in some cases, around the world). I also conducted presentations and trainings to create awareness of these tools to the rest of the Tax Practice, and ran monthly reports using Microsoft Access to track usage.

What they like about Pricewaterhouse Coopers:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
