Daily Duties at Rjf International Corporation:

In December of 1998 I was contacted by RJF about the possible supervisor position in their manufacturing plant. I was currently working at Century Aluminum but was willing to listen to what they had to offer. After interviewing, I was asked what it would take to get me to work for them. Since I was gainfully employed, I gave them a high salaried number. They accepted that offer and so I went to work on December 7, 1998. They informed me that I was being hired because they had two long term supervisor's on a last chance letter for performance and needed someone with the background and leadership to turn around a struggling shift that had no leadership. I was assigned to that shift, which was midnights and immediately began noticing a lot of problems. I observed, took notes, and devised a plan of action. I slowely began settting expectations, administrating discipline when required, and building a team. It took several months, and lots of grief, but I finally sold the majority of the crew on working as a team, meeting expectations, and trusting each other. I allowed them input, worked closely with them and watched as they started taking pride and ownership in their work. My main responsibilities were 6 production machines with 22 direct hourly reports. I also had direct supervision of a color technician. I assumed responsibilities for the shift maintenance, safety, and manpower assignments. My daily routine consisted of arriving at work around 11:15, checking schedules at my machines and prioritizing them, settting daily goals for the crews, checking for any unfinished work from the previous shift, then we held a shift turnover meeting with the off-going shift. I would check e-mails and the log book for any special tasks required for that nights shift. At 11:50 I would go to each of my assigned machines and communicate the daily production goals to each crew, and ensure that they had all thenecessary tools, knowledge and direction needed to achieve the set goals. The types of machines that I was responsible for and familiar with are: Extruders, both single and twin screws; Mills, calenders, henschels and Banburies(mixers), Roller die, printers-both design with 1 to 5 print stations, and pad coat; Laminators (print, tint, emboss); Embossers (tint and emboss); precision slitters; inspection racks; annealing oven; electrical tester, quality control tools such as tear and tensil strength testers, snap guage. I also worked on process improvement projects which are listed below in achievements. I gave weekly and monthly safety meetings, prepared monthly production reports, and also was assigned to give tours to visitors.
